Life at Jacksonville Beach
Jacksonville Beach is its own small city on the barrier island east of the Intracoastal Waterway. Beach Boulevard runs straight across the island to the ocean, ending near the Seawalk Pavilion and the pier. Homes range from old beach cottages and concrete-block houses a few blocks from the sand to oceanfront condos and newer townhomes west of Third Street.
Almost every beach home shares one problem: salt.
What salt and sand do to a lock
Ocean air carries salt far inland, and on the island, every door gets it. Salt and blowing sand get into the keyway and settle on the pins and springs. Over time:
- the key gets harder to turn, then won't turn at all;
- lower-grade zinc-alloy locks pit and swell until the deadbolt sticks halfway;
- exterior screws rust, and the lock works loose in the door;
- the latch on a sliding glass door corrodes and stops catching.
Seized locks are one of the most common beach calls. Often we can free up, clean and lubricate the lock with a dry lubricant, since sprays like WD-40 trap sand. When the parts are too far gone, we replace them with solid brass or stainless hardware that holds up better by the ocean. Our door lock repair page explains what we check, and high-security locks covers heavier hardware for oceanfront homes.
Rentals and keypad locks
Short-term rentals are common near the pier and along the oceanfront. Handing out physical keys to rental guests creates problems: keys go home in beach bags, and copies get made. A keypad or smart lock lets you set a code for each stay and cancel it at checkout. Near the ocean, pick a model with a sealed keypad, and keep a keyed backup for dead batteries.
If you own the rental, it's good practice to rekey any keyed locks when you change cleaners or property managers.
Lockouts at the beach
A typical beach day: the car is parked at a beach access, and the key sits on the seat while everyone carries chairs to the sand. Or the key goes in the trunk with the towels. We open locked cars at beach accesses and in the lots near the pier with Lishi picks instead of a slim jim, so nothing gets bent, scratched or unplugged.
Home lockouts happen a lot after a morning run or a walk to the beach. We pick the lock first whenever possible.
Getting to Jacksonville Beach
From our base in 32258 we cross the Intracoastal on J. Turner Butler Boulevard or Beach Boulevard, depending on where you are. The trip usually takes 30 to 50 minutes. Summer crowds and events at the pier slow down A1A and Third Street, and we'll tell you if that's likely to affect the arrival time.
What changes the price
Seized locks sometimes take longer to open than a normal lockout, and coastal hardware costs more than standard locks. The number of locks also matters. We quote the job on the phone, and our pricing page has more detail.
Up and down the coast
South of Jacksonville Beach we serve Ponte Vedra Beach and Nocatee. Back across the water, we also serve Southside.

Frequently asked questions
My deadbolt at the beach is frozen and the key won't turn. Can it be saved?
Often, yes, if you stop forcing it. Salt and sand build up inside the cylinder until the pins stick. We can usually free and clean the lock, and if the parts are pitted, we replace just the cylinder or the lock. Forcing the key is how most keys break off inside beach locks.
What lock should I use on a Jax Beach vacation rental?
A keypad deadbolt with a weather-resistant finish, and a keyed backup. Keypads let you give each guest a new code and cancel it at checkout, so you never have to hand out or collect keys. By the ocean, choose a model rated for outdoor coastal use and change the batteries on a schedule.
I locked my keys in the car at a beach access. Can you find me?
Yes. Tell us the nearest street, beach access or landmark, such as the pier or the Seawalk Pavilion. Send a map pin by text if you can. We open the car with Lishi picks instead of a slim jim, so nothing gets bent or scratched. We only open cars: if the key is lost rather than locked inside, we can't make a new one.
Should I do anything with my locks before a storm?
Yes: test every exterior lock before hurricane season. Make sure each door locks and unlocks smoothly, and that sliding doors latch firmly. Storms push water and salt into locks, so a lock that's stiff in June may fail right when you need to secure the house. Call us to service stiff locks early.
Locked out or need a lock fixed?
