Smart Lock Keeps Dropping Offline in Your Jacksonville Home? Installed and Connected Right

Jax Locksmith Solutions installs keypad and smart locks from brands such as Schlage, Yale, Kwikset and August in Jacksonville homes and rentals. We check the Wi-Fi or hub signal at the door, which concrete block walls often weaken, align the bolt so the motor doesn't jam, and set up your app, codes and backup key.
A smart lock is only smart if it stays connected. Many Florida homes have concrete block walls that weaken Wi-Fi at the front door, and humid-season door swell makes motorized bolts jam and drain batteries. We help you choose the right keypad or smart lock, install and align it, check the signal where the lock actually sits, and set up your codes and app.

Types of smart locks we install

  • Keypad deadbolts. Enter a code instead of using a key. No Wi-Fi or app needed. The simplest choice, and the one most families are happiest with.
  • Wi-Fi smart locks, such as the Schlage Encode or Kwikset Halo. Lock and unlock from your phone, get alerts, and send codes to guests from anywhere.
  • Z-Wave and Zigbee locks that connect to an alarm panel or a smart home hub.
  • Retrofit smart locks, such as August, that replace only the inside part of your existing deadbolt, so the outside looks the same and your key still works.
  • Smart levers and handlesets for doors where you want a matching look.

If you already bought a lock, we install it. If not, we help you choose, and we carry popular models in the van. For standard deadbolts and knobs, see lock installation.

Will a smart lock work in a concrete block home?

We see this problem often, and it's one DIY installs often miss. Many Florida homes are built with concrete block walls, called CMU, covered in stucco. Block, stucco and the metal lath behind it all weaken radio signals. The router is often in a back bedroom or closet, and the front door is on the far side of one or two block walls.

The result is a lock that paired fine in the kitchen, then keeps going offline at the front door. Notifications arrive late or not at all, and remote unlocking fails right when you need it.

Our signal check fixes that before it starts:

  1. We test the signal at the door itself, not in the living room.
  2. We check which band the lock needs. Most Wi-Fi locks, including the Schlage Encode, use only 2.4 GHz. Mesh routers that merge bands under one network name can confuse them during setup.
  3. We plan where the bridge, hub or repeater goes. A Wi-Fi bridge or mesh node near the door, or a plug-in Z-Wave or Zigbee repeater, usually solves it.
  4. We test again after install, including remote unlocking from your phone on cellular data.

Door alignment matters more with a motor

A key can force a bolt past a slightly-off strike. A small motor can't. When the door swells in Jacksonville's humid months, a smart deadbolt that drags on the strike will jam, show errors and eat batteries. It's a common complaint with smart locks here.

So we treat every smart lock install as a door lock repair job, too. We check that the bolt slides freely with the door closed, adjust the strike and hinges if needed, and set the lock's auto-lock only when the door closes cleanly.

Built for Florida weather

  • Heat and sun. Exterior keypads on west-facing doors bake in the afternoon. We check the lock's operating range and recommend models with a strong finish rating.
  • Rain and humidity. We seal and fit the outside escutcheon properly so water doesn't run into the keypad.
  • Salt air. Near the ocean, choose a lock with a top BHMA finish grade. Our high-security locks page explains coastal finishes.
  • Hurricane season. Smart locks keep working on batteries during outages, but remote access goes down with the internet. Keep a physical key or know your backup method.

Smart lock security tips

  • Keep a backup way in. A key, or an outside battery contact, saves you a lockout call.
  • Use unique codes for each person, and delete codes for contractors and past guests.
  • Choose a lock with a real security grade. Some low-cost smart locks are easy to force.
  • Turn on two-factor login for the lock's app.
  • Match the key. We can rekey the lock's cylinder to your other locks.

For landlords and short-term rentals

Keypad and Wi-Fi locks make rental turnover easy. Give each guest or tenant their own code, schedule it to start and end, and never chase a lost key again. We install and set up locks for vacation rentals at Jacksonville Beach and in St. Augustine, and for long-term rentals across Jacksonville.

How a smart lock install works

  1. Call or text with your door and the lock you want, or ask us to recommend one.
  2. We check the door and the signal before installing.
  3. We install and align the lock, then pair it with the app, hub or alarm.
  4. We set up codes for your family and show you the backup key or battery method.
  5. We test everything with you, including remote access, and give you an itemized invoice.

Our lock installations are backed by a 5-year money-back guarantee.

What it costs

The total depends on:

  • The lock. Keypad-only models cost less than Wi-Fi locks.
  • Supplied by us or by you.
  • Door work. New holes or strike alignment add time.
  • Signal work. A bridge, hub or repeater is extra if you need one.

You get the full price on the phone before we drive out, and we confirm it before any work starts. See our pricing guide.

Where we install smart locks

We set up smart locks across Jacksonville, from new homes in Bartram Park and Julington Creek and Ponte Vedra Beach to rentals at Jacksonville Beach and homes in Mandarin.

Ready to go keyless? Call (904) 509-0907 or text us the lock you're looking at. We're available Mon & Fri 7 AM–2 PM and Tue & Thu 7 AM–6 PM.

How we work

No surprises. No scare tactics.

Locksmith scams follow a pattern. Here is how we do the opposite, on every job.

  1. Upfront price on the phone

Tell us what's going on and we quote the total before we drive out. If something on site changes the job, we explain why and you approve the new price before we start.

  2. ID check before we open

Before we open a door, we check your ID and something that ties you to the address or vehicle, like a lease, bill or registration. It protects you as much as it protects us.

  3. Courtesy call and marked arrival

We call when we're on the way and arrive in a vehicle marked with our name. The person you talked to on the phone is the business that shows up, not a subcontractor.

  4. Non-destructive entry first

Most lockouts open by picking or bypass tools, with no damage. We only drill as a last resort, and only after you agree to it and the cost.

  5. Itemized invoice

When the work is done you get an itemized invoice with our business name on it. It matches the price you agreed to, with no surprise fees added at the door.

  6. Local and owner-operated

When you call, you reach a local business based in the 32258 area, not a national call center that sells your job to whoever is closest.

Straight answers

Frequently asked questions

Will a smart lock work in a concrete block home?

Yes, with the right setup. Concrete block and stucco walls weaken Wi-Fi and hub signals, so a lock that worked in the store can drop offline at your front door. We measure the signal where the lock sits and, if it's weak, place a Wi-Fi bridge, mesh node or Z-Wave repeater where the lock can reach it.

Does a smart lock work when the power or internet is out?

Yes. Smart locks run on their own batteries, so the keypad and your codes keep working during a power outage. You lose remote features, such as unlocking from your phone away from home, until the internet comes back. That's why we always set up a backup way in, such as a key.

What happens if the smart lock battery dies?

Most smart locks warn you for weeks before the batteries run out. If they do die, many models have a backup key cylinder or contacts for a 9-volt battery on the outside. We show you your lock's backup method at install. A bolt that rubs the strike drains batteries fast, so we align it carefully.

Which smart lock should I buy?

It depends on how you'll use it. A simple keypad deadbolt suits most families. A Wi-Fi lock adds phone control and alerts. Z-Wave or Zigbee locks suit homes with an alarm or smart home hub. We recommend models with a good BHMA security grade and a finish rated for Florida weather.

Can I keep my existing key with a smart lock?

Often, yes. Retrofit locks such as the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock replace only the inside of your deadbolt, so your outside key still works. Full smart deadbolts usually have their own key cylinder, which we can rekey to match your other locks so one key still opens every door.

Do you set up smart locks for vacation rentals?

Yes. Hosts at Jacksonville Beach and in St. Augustine use keypad and Wi-Fi locks so each guest gets their own code, with no keys to hand off or lose. We install locks that can schedule codes from an app, and we can set cleaners and maintenance up with their own codes.
