Lost Your Mailbox Key in Jacksonville? New Mailbox Lock and Keys in One Visit
Taking calls until 9 PM
Most of Jacksonville in 20–45 minutes
First: who owns your mailbox?
It sounds like a small detail, but it decides who changes the lock.
| Type of mailbox | Who owns it | Who changes the lock |
|---|---|---|
| Curbside or wall-mounted box at your home | You | You, or a locksmith like us |
| Cluster box unit in an HOA or new subdivision | Usually the HOA or developer | The HOA's process, often a locksmith, with you or the HOA paying |
| Wall unit in an apartment or condo building | The property owner | Property management, often through a locksmith |
| Box owned by the post office | USPS | The post office |
If you're not sure, ask your HOA or property manager, or check with your local post office. Most cluster boxes in Jacksonville subdivisions are privately owned, so a locksmith can handle the compartment lock.
Mailbox locks we replace
- Curbside and wall-mounted home mailboxes with a locking compartment
- Cluster box units, the gray or bronze pedestal boxes common in newer neighborhoods such as Bartram Park, Julington Creek and Nocatee
- Apartment and condo wall units, including the rows of boxes in a lobby or breezeway
- Office and suite mailboxes in business parks
- Drop boxes for rent payments and documents
We don't open the carrier's master door or parcel lockers on a cluster box. Those use a postal lock that only the post office controls.
When to replace a mailbox lock
- You lost the key, or never got one when you moved in.
- You just bought a home. Previous owners and their family may still have a key to your mail.
- A tenant moved out without returning the mailbox key.
- The lock is jammed, rusted or broken. Salt air near the ocean is hard on small cam locks.
- Someone tampered with it. Mail with bank statements, checks and new cards is a target for theft.
How a mailbox lock change works
- Call or text with your address and a photo of the box. We confirm who owns it and bring the right lock.
- We check ID that shows your address. For cluster boxes, we may confirm with your HOA or property manager.
- We open the compartment by picking the lock, or drilling it if it's damaged.
- We fit a new cam lock of the right length and turn direction, so it latches securely.
- We test it and hand you new keys. Extra keys can be cut on the spot. See key duplication.
Most visits take 15 to 30 minutes on site.
Getting the right replacement lock
Mailbox locks look alike, but a lock that's slightly wrong won't hold the door shut. We match three things:
- Cam length and shape. The cam is the small metal arm that swings behind the door frame. Too short and the door pulls open; too long and it won't turn.
- Turn direction. Some locks turn left to open, some right. We match the original so the door latches the way it should.
- The maker's fit. Cluster and wall units from makers such as Salsbury and Florence take locks sized for their doors. We carry common sizes and order the rest.
Every new lock comes with its own key, different from every other box in the unit, so each resident's key opens only their own compartment.
For landlords, property managers and HOAs
Mailbox locks are part of every rental turnover. The new tenant should be the only person with a key to their mail. We change mailbox locks along with the unit's door locks in one visit, which saves you a second trip and a second charge. When the unit's locks only need new keys, we rekey them. See our page for property managers and realtors.
HOAs can call us to replace several compartment locks at once, or to replace worn locks across a whole unit.
Keep your mail secure
- Collect your mail every day, or put a hold on it through the post office when you travel.
- Consider a locking mailbox if your curbside box has none. Choose a USPS-approved design.
- Watch for signs of tampering, such as scratches around the lock or a door that won't close.
- Report mail theft to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and your local police.
What it costs
The price depends on:
- The type of box and the lock size it needs
- Whether the old lock can be picked, or has to be drilled out
- How many locks. Landlords and HOAs save by doing several in one visit.
- Extra keys beyond the two that come with a new lock
You get the full price on the phone before we drive out, and we confirm it before any work starts. See our pricing guide for how we price small jobs.

How we work
No surprises. No scare tactics.
Locksmith scams follow a pattern. Here is how we do the opposite, on every job.
-
Upfront price on the phone
Tell us what's going on and we quote the total before we drive out. If something on site changes the job, we explain why and you approve the new price before we start.
-
ID check before we open
Before we open a door, we check your ID and something that ties you to the address or vehicle, like a lease, bill or registration. It protects you as much as it protects us.
-
Courtesy call and marked arrival
We call when we're on the way and arrive in a vehicle marked with our name. The person you talked to on the phone is the business that shows up, not a subcontractor.
-
Non-destructive entry first
Most lockouts open by picking or bypass tools, with no damage. We only drill as a last resort, and only after you agree to it and the cost.
-
Itemized invoice
When the work is done you get an itemized invoice with our business name on it. It matches the price you agreed to, with no surprise fees added at the door.
-
Local and owner-operated
When you call, you reach a local business based in the 32258 area, not a national call center that sells your job to whoever is closest.
Straight answers
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if I lose my mailbox key?
First find out who owns your mailbox. If it's your own curbside box, or a cluster or wall unit owned by your HOA or landlord, a locksmith can replace the lock and give you new keys. Check with your HOA or property manager first, since many have a set process. If the post office owns the box, contact your local post office.
Who is responsible for a cluster mailbox lock?
Usually the HOA, developer or property manager, not the post office. In most private communities the cluster box unit is owned by the community, and compartment locks are the owner's or resident's responsibility. The post office handles only the units it owns and the carrier's master lock.
Can you open my mailbox without a key?
Yes. Most mailbox compartment locks are simple cam locks. We pick them or, if needed, drill the old lock out, then fit a new lock so your box is secure again. We ask for ID showing your address, and for cluster boxes we may confirm with your HOA or property manager.
How long does a mailbox lock change take?
Usually 15 to 30 minutes once we arrive. Most compartment locks come in a few standard sizes, and we carry common ones in the van. Older or unusual boxes may need a lock ordered, and we tell you that on the phone after you text us a photo.
Can you get into the parcel locker or the carrier's door?
No. The large carrier door and parcel lockers on a cluster box use a postal lock that only the post office opens. If your package is stuck in a parcel locker, contact your local post office. We handle the lock on your own compartment.
