Too Many Keys at Your Jacksonville Business? A Master Key System That Fits Your Team

How a master key system works
Think of the keys as a pyramid.
- Change keys open a single door or lock, such as one office, one apartment or one storage room.
- Sub-master keys open a group of doors, such as one floor, one department or one building wing.
- Master keys open every lock in the system.
- Grand master keys sit above several masters, for owners with more than one building or property.
Here's a simple example. At a medical office, the front desk key opens the lobby and reception. Each provider's key opens their exam rooms. The office manager's key opens every office, and the owner's master opens everything, including the records room and the server closet. The cleaning crew's key opens only the common areas.
Who uses master key systems
- Offices and professional suites where staff, managers and cleaners need different access
- Medical and dental offices with records rooms and medicine storage
- Churches with offices, classrooms, kitchens and sanctuaries
- Landlords and property managers with many units and one set of keys to carry. See our page for property managers and realtors.
- HOA clubhouses, pool gates and maintenance rooms
- Warehouses and shops with offices, cages and loading docks
Signs it's time for a master key system
- Managers carry a ring of ten or more keys and still can't open every door.
- Nobody is sure how many copies of the front door key exist.
- Keys are labeled with room names on a hook in the break room.
- Every time someone leaves, you rekey everything or, worse, nothing.
- New tenants, staff or vendors need access to some doors but not others.
How we set one up
- Walk-through. We visit, list every door and lock, and check which hardware can be rekeyed.
- Keying plan. We work out who needs to open what. That becomes a keying schedule: a written list of each key and the doors it opens.
- Key chart. We calculate the pin depths for each level. The chart stays with you and with us, and it isn't shared with anyone else.
- Keying the locks. We rekey your existing cylinders into the system, or install new ones where needed. We work door by door so the building is never left open.
- Cutting and labeling keys. Each key gets a stamped code instead of a room name, so a lost key doesn't tell a stranger which door it opens.
- Testing and handover. We test every key in every lock, then hand you the schedule and a simple key log.
Our lock installations are backed by a 5-year money-back guarantee.
Key control: who can copy your keys?
A master key system is only as good as your control of the keys. Be clear about one thing: a key stamped "Do Not Duplicate" is a request, not a lock on copying. Many shops will copy it anyway.
For real key control, we recommend a restricted or patented keyway for the master level. Keys for systems like Medeco and Mul-T-Lock use blanks that aren't sold to the public, and copies are only cut for people on your authorized list. This matters most for businesses with staff turnover, and for landlords who hand keys to tenants and vendors.
Plan it right: the trade-offs
A master key system adds convenience, but every level adds risk if a key goes missing. We help you keep it simple:
- Make very few top-level masters. Two or three are usually enough.
- Use the fewest levels that work. More levels mean more combinations inside each lock and more to manage.
- Leave room to grow. A good chart has space for new doors and new tenants without rekeying everything.
- Keep a key log. Track who holds each key, and collect keys when people leave.
If a key is lost, we rekey only the part of the system that key opens. That's the payoff for planning.
Working with your existing locks
Many Jacksonville offices and shopping centers have a mix of locks installed by past tenants over the years. Common commercial brands such as Schlage, Yale, Sargent, Medeco and Mul-T-Lock can be keyed into a system. Mixed brands can sometimes share a keyway with new cylinders, while worn or low-grade locks are better replaced. See lock installation for new hardware.
What a master key system costs
Every system is different, so we quote after a walk-through. The price depends on:
- The number of doors and cylinders, including padlocks, cabinets and gates
- The number of levels in the system
- Rekeying or new cylinders. Rekeying existing compatible locks costs far less.
- Standard or restricted keyways. Restricted keys cost more but give real key control.
- How many keys you need cut
See our pricing guide for more. You get the full price on the phone before we drive out, and we confirm it before any work starts.

We install master key systems for businesses and properties across Jacksonville, including offices in Southside, shops and clinics in Mandarin and properties in San Marco. For everything else we do for businesses, see our commercial locksmith services.

How we work
No surprises. No scare tactics.
Locksmith scams follow a pattern. Here is how we do the opposite, on every job.
-
Upfront price on the phone
Tell us what's going on and we quote the total before we drive out. If something on site changes the job, we explain why and you approve the new price before we start.
-
ID check before we open
Before we open a door, we check your ID and something that ties you to the address or vehicle, like a lease, bill or registration. It protects you as much as it protects us.
-
Courtesy call and marked arrival
We call when we're on the way and arrive in a vehicle marked with our name. The person you talked to on the phone is the business that shows up, not a subcontractor.
-
Non-destructive entry first
Most lockouts open by picking or bypass tools, with no damage. We only drill as a last resort, and only after you agree to it and the cost.
-
Itemized invoice
When the work is done you get an itemized invoice with our business name on it. It matches the price you agreed to, with no surprise fees added at the door.
-
Local and owner-operated
When you call, you reach a local business based in the 32258 area, not a national call center that sells your job to whoever is closest.
Straight answers
Frequently asked questions
What is a master key system?
A master key system is a set of locks keyed so that different keys open different groups of doors. Each person's key opens only their own doors, a manager's key opens a whole area, and the master key opens everything. It cuts down the number of keys people carry and makes it easy to control who can go where.
Can you use our existing locks for a master key system?
Usually, yes. Most commercial locks from brands like Schlage, Yale and Sargent can be rekeyed into a master system, which costs much less than buying new hardware. Mixed brands may need new cylinders or a common keyway. We check every door on a walk-through and tell you which locks can stay.
What happens if someone loses a master key?
The locks that key opens should be rekeyed. With a well-planned system, a lost office key means rekeying one door, and a lost manager key means one area. A lost top master means the whole system, which is why we recommend making very few of them and keeping a record of who holds each one.
Can employees copy the keys in a master key system?
With a standard keyway, anyone with a key can get it copied at a hardware store, and a "Do Not Duplicate" stamp is only a request. For real key control, we use restricted or patented keyways such as Medeco or Mul-T-Lock. Copies of those keys are only cut for people on your authorized list.
How long does it take to set up a master key system?
Most small offices are planned in one walk-through and keyed in a single visit of a few hours. Larger buildings, restricted keyways or new cylinders that need ordering take longer. We schedule the work around your hours so doors are never left unlocked, and we test every key before we leave.
Can I have one key for all the doors at my home?
Yes. Most homes don't need a full master system. Keying the front door, back door, garage entry and deadbolts to the same key, called keying alike, usually does the job. If you rent out part of the property, such as a garage apartment, a simple master setup lets you keep a key that opens both.
